چکیده

Project History. In 2008 differences in colonization patterns at several different locations throughout the Central Sands were observed. These different patterns may be indicating changes in when CPB emerges from diapause. Previous research on other insect pests has documented behavioral shifts in emergence as a way insects avoid environmental stressors. An insecticidal agent, such as in-plant neonicotinoids, may be considered an acute or chronic stressor on CPB. Since CPB in our region possesses a near obligate association to cultivated potato, insecticide use patterns must be considered as a contributing factor associated with changing beetle emergence. Population wide exposure to these compounds through the season may select for individuals which emerge later and are able to tolerate sub-lethal, in-plant doses of insecticide. Documentation of this process is essential to the continued sustainable use of the neonicotinoid class of insecticides.

Voltinism and the Induction of Aestival Diapause in the Colorado Potato Beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Field studies over 3 yr demonstrated that overwintering populations of the Colorado potato beetle in upstate New York and on Long Island are composed of adults from both the first and second summer generations. The two populations from the climatically different regions differ in their responses to environmental factors that influence voltinism. The critical photoperiod for aestival diapause in...

Survival and fecundity of Bt-susceptible Colorado potato beetle adults after consumption of transgenic potato containing Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis Cry3A toxin

Survival and fecundity of Colorado potato beetle adults, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), that had or had not fed previously on non-transgenic potato before exposure to transgenic potato containing the Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis Cry3A toxin (Bt) was investigated. In the laboratory, < 5% of first-generation adults survived after two weeks when restricted to Bt foliage since eclosi...

A comparison of internal and external lipids of nondiapausing and diapause initiation phase adult Colorado potato beetles, Leptinotarsa decemlineata.

The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, reared under diapause-inducing conditions will emerge from the soil as an adult and enter the diapause initiation phase, a period where metabolic reserves are stockpiled before the beetles enter the nonfeeding diapause maintenance phase. Internal and external lipids were characterized during the diapause initiation phase (IP) and compared t...

Population Dynamics of the Colorado Potato Beetle in an Agroecosystem with Tomatoes and Potatoes with Management Implications to Processing Tomatoes

We evaluated the population dynamics of Colorado potato beetle in processing tomatoes and potatoes using immigration proÞles, density through time, rates of development and survivorship. We also evaluated the beetleÕs inßuence on yield of processing cultivars. Colorado potato beetle immigrated into both crops. The Þrst available crop had the earliest immigration event and higher immigrating adu...
